Busted! 4 of the Most Common Credit Union Myths

Posted on Jun 12, 2021

Myth 1
“I’m not allowed to be a member because eligibility is based on being a member of some small group of affiliated organizations.”

While it is true that credit unions have guidelines to qualify members — for example where you live, work, worship, or go to school — membership eligibility is much more simple and inclusive than you may think.

Myth 1 – Busted!  Some people continue to believe that to be a member of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union you have to either work for or go to school at the University of Notre Dame. We love our Notre Dame community and while our roots were planted at the University, there are a multitude of other easy ways for most people, even nationwide, to join Notre Dame FCU.. See the full list here!

Myth 2
“It is difficult to find free ATMs.”

One of the wonderful benefits of credit unions is how closely they work together to help serve credit union members and make life more simple so you can get on with the things in life that matter to you.

Myth 2 – Busted!  Notre Dame FCU is part of the CO-OP ATM network, meaning there are nearly 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs easily available to credit union members across the United States. You can rest easy—or travel easy—knowing your credit union account is accessible for your secure and timely financial and transaction needs.    Find the nearest ATM or Credit Union here.

Myth 3
“Credit Unions don’t seem to have advanced consumer technology that most banks seem to offer.”

As a member of Notre Dame FCU you’ll experience our advanced technology because we are committed to pursuing innovation that delivers all sorts of expanded member services to meet your banking needs.

Myth 3 – Busted!  With convenient Mobile Apps we make it easy for you to access and monitor your account balances, to transfer funds between accounts, to deposit checks, and with our Irish Card Shield app to freeze portions or all of your debit and credit cards for a time frame you select. In Summer 2017 we’ll be implementing Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay to better serve the ways you want to connect to your credit union!

Myth 4
“Credit Unions aren’t able to offer their members rates as low as banks”

There seems to be a general impression that bigger stores, bigger companies, bigger buildings are better able to offer lower prices on services and products.  When you consider the structure of a credit union compared with a bank, one major difference between them is that credit unions are not-for-profit organizations that return all profits to their members.  Do you know what these returned profits look like?

Myth 4 – Busted!  As a member, you’ll often experience cash back opportunities, lower interest rates on loans, and enjoy higher interest with your deposits.  Compare us for yourself and see!
