The Subscription Trap: How You Can Avoid It

Posted on Jun 25, 2026

It just starts at $9.99 here. And $8.99 here. Spotify here, Amazon Prime there, and you can’t forget about Netflix. Individually, these subscription services may feel insignificant, but over time, they quickly add up, becoming a massive weight, pulling down your financial situation.

Almost 9 in 10 U.S. households are paying for at least one streaming service. And many aren’t stopping at just one—households often juggle three, four, or even more subscriptions at once. When you combine streaming, music, apps, and fitness platforms, it’s not uncommon for people to spend over $100 – $200 a month without fully realizing it.

So how do you avoid falling into the subscription trap?

A good first step would be to start with a subscription audit.

The first step is awareness. Take 10–15 minutes to review your bank and credit card statements from the past two to three months. Write down every recurring charge you see. This includes not just the obvious services, but also the forgotten free trials, annual renewals, and app subscriptions buried in your phone settings. These silent killers can cause a lot of extra expenses without your knowledge. Highlight anything that hasn’t been used in the last 30 – 60 days.

Seeing everything listed in one place is often a wake-up call.

The next step is to assess whether this subscription is worth it or if you really use it. If it has been weeks or even months since you last used it or used it infrequently, it may not be worth keeping. Cancel seasonal or temporary subscriptions until you need them again in the future. Additionally, replace paid services with free alternatives.  If unsure about a service, take a break from it and see if you miss it. If so, resubscribe.

A good way to audit spending and keep track of services is to have a subscription tracking system. This would help keep everything organized and so you don’t overcharge yourself. Creating a simple spreadsheet with calendar reminders for renewal dates will help keep you on track. This spreadsheet would allow you to do a check-up on your subscriptions after a period of time to see if it’s worth it.
