Notre Dame FCU Helps People Seeking Citizenship

Posted on Jan 27, 2017

NOTRE DAME, IN – Notre Dame Federal Credit Union (Notre Dame FCU) announced today a new loan product geared toward assisting people who need help financing the costs of immigration related fees. These fees include those required to become a U.S. citizen after being a legal permanent resident for more than five years.

The credit union’s Opportunity Loan provides financing for the application and legal expenses associated with seeking citizenship, permanent residency or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) extensions.

Notre Dame FCU President and CEO Tom Gryp said, “We received multiple requests from the community to help people afford the costs associated with becoming an American citizen or other immigration processing related fees. Our Opportunity Loan was specifically designed to meet that need.”

The Opportunity Loan was created after discussing the need with several local social service providers and community leaders.  The feedback was central in crafting a solution that delivered the needed funds to qualified people as quickly and easily as possible.

Gryp concluded, “Any time we can help people improve their lives, it not only helps them, but strengthens the fabric of our entire community. We all benefit when we take the time to listen and work together.”

Borrowers can apply for the Opportunity Loan for up to $3,500 for periods of 12, 18 or 24 months. Loan proceeds will be disbursed directly to service providers.
