An Update on the Changes to the Zelle Standalone Mobile App

Posted on Feb 11, 2025

At Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, we strive to keep our Member/Owners informed about changes in the financial tools you may use daily. A significant change is coming to the Zelle mobile application. Over the next few months, the standalone Zelle app will be phased out, and there are key changes that will affect how users send and receive money through the platform. Here’s what you need to know, and here’s how we’re here to support you.

What’s Happening with the Zelle App?

Starting now, new users will no longer be able to enroll in the Zelle mobile app. Existing users will lose the ability to send or receive money using the app after March 31, 2025.

While Zelle itself isn’t going away, unfortunately, they are no longer allowing our Members to utilize their platform.

Does Notre Dame FCU Offer Zelle?

No, Notre Dame FCU does not offer Zelle through its mobile app or online banking services.

Why Doesn’t Notre Dame FCU Use Zelle?

With the number of free peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms available to our Members, we’ve chosen to invest our profits in the communities we serve rather than alternative payment solutions. We have listed several alternative options for your use below.

Alternative Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Payment Platforms

While the stand alone Zelle app is transitioning away, there are other reliable and secure options to easily transfer your money. Here are five top-performing P2P payment platforms we recommend, along with a closer look at their features and security strengths.

1. Apple Pay

  • Features: Apple Pay integrates seamlessly across Apple devices, making it easy to send money via iMessage, shop in stores, and make payments in apps or online. It’s convenient for users within the Apple ecosystem.
  • Security: Apple Pay is highly secure, utilizing Face ID or Touch ID, unique transaction codes, and device-specific account numbers. Card details are not stored on your device or Apple servers, keeping them hidden from merchants during transactions.

2. Google Pay

  • Features: With Google Pay, you can transfer money to others, make contactless payments in stores, and manage payment methods in one place. It’s user-friendly and works across most devices.
  • Security: Google Pay encrypts all payment details, offers fraud detection, and allows you to lock or erase your account remotely if your device is lost or stolen.

 3. PayPal

  • Features: PayPal lets you send money to friends, split bills, make purchases online, or even pay businesses directly. You can also set up a PayPal balance or link it with your credit/debit cards or bank account for quick payments.
  • Security: PayPal offers Buyer and Seller Protection, 24/7 monitoring for suspicious activity, and two-factor authentication to keep your account safe. All transactions are encrypted for added peace of mind.

4. Venmo

  • Features: With Venmo, you can send money to friends instantly using their username, phone number, or email. You can also split large purchases like rent or groceries and even customize your transactions with fun emojis.
  • Security: Venmo encrypts user data and offers PIN codes for an added layer of security. You can also enable two-factor authentication to protect your account.

5. CashApp

  • Features: Cash App allows you to send and receive money instantly. With linked debit cards, you can make purchases directly from the app. We recommend setting up a secure pin before transferring money.
  • Security: Security features include account alerts for unauthorized access, multi-factor authentication, and the ability to disable card transactions right from the app. Your transactions are protected using encryption and fraud detection. We highly recommend turning on Cash App’s advanced security features to keep your account protected

Remember, transferring funds through a P2P app is exactly like sending cash. Whichever platform you use to transfer money, always verify the individual you are sending funds to before clicking transfer. This extra step helps keep you and your cash safe!
