It’s here, baby! Notre Dame football kicks off fall camp starting this weekend which means the season is upon us. 33 days until ND kicks-off its season on Sept. 2nd vs. Louisville. It was also announced that the Oct. 12th USC game is an Irish Wear Green greenout game. Should they wear the 1977 throwbacks you wore against the Trojans in 2007? Yes, yes, yes!!! While I think it should be a “greenout” at every home game, I am glad they are doing it again this year.
Let’s go through a couple rapid fire topics: Phil Jurkovec, who will be Notre Dame’s go-to wideout, and pre-season awards lists. Ready go!
Jurkovec, Notre Dame Sophomore is the slotted QB2 going into fall camp, BUT I am hearing more buzz on frosh Brendon Clark than Jurkovec. Anyhow, Jurkovec is a 6'5 225 QB and in 2018, played in 2 games and went 0-for-2 throwing. In high school, he tossed for 11,144 passing yards 71 TD passes and was 247 sports #5 dual threat QB / #66 overall player. Jurkovec was the No. 3 guy as a true freshman last year and in his first spring he was very impatient and hard on himself for not progressing the way he would have liked. While this is common for young QBs, his timeline for progression has expedited as his role has become more important. He’s now one play away from being QB1. Fall camp is UBER important for him. No pressure, right?!
Next up? We know the names Chase Claypool and Chris Finke at WR, but which Irish wide receiver do YOU think will have the most production this season? My bet is on Michael Young. He showed glimpses of explosiveness next year, and the way Ian Book distributes the ball, it would
Perhaps a more obscure topics has to do with a couple pre-season award watch lists. Which is the bigger head scratcher? Chase Claypool being left off the preseason Biletnikoff Award Watch List or center Jarrett Patterson, who’s never played a game at center in his life, being included on the preseason Remington Award Watch List? Patterson, 100.% For perpsective on the Biletnikoff, in 2014, Will Fuller had 76 catches for 1,094 yards and 15 touchdowns yet he was not on the Biletnikoff Preseason watch list and he was never added to the midseason watch list. He was a semifinalist the next year when he had 1,258 yards and 14 TD. So based on the way the Biletnikoff people have done business in the past ’m not surprised at all that Claypool’s not getting preseason recognition. Everyone who follows the Irish closely is scratching their head about Patterson being on the preseason Remingon list. It’s not because he isn’t good and not because he doesn’t have a chance to be really good this year. it’s because he’s never played a snap at center in his life other than spring practice and the Blue-Gold Game. These lists serve a purpose; it’s early August and we’re all anticipating the start of the season, we’re talking about college football and that’s what the lists are for.
Is it September 2nd yet? Well, first let’s get through fall camp. I’ll update you on how things are developing leading up to the first kickoff of the 2019 season. Stay Sharp!
